The representations of the British youth culture in this article suggest that they are:
- Uneducated
- Violent
- Embarrassments
- Troubled
- Hooligans
- Mindless
- Lost
- Anti-Social
My Academic Response to the Article
My response to your article - British youths are 'the most unpleasant and violent in the world': Damning verdict of writer as globe reacts to riots - is that I think they are being portrayed in a hegemonic way. The reason I think this, is because you are using a stereotyped brand of people to put the blame for the riots upon. Just because these people are stereotyped for being hooligans, it does not mean that they were the main cause of the riots.
Branding British youths as 'the most unpleasant and potentially violent young people in the world' is unfair, because you do not know every British youth in the world, so you do not know if we're all like that.
